My cats would rsther than splash from murky puddles, bird baths, or only about anywhere H2O has picked up as good as churned in with leave as good as mud as good as twigs rsther than than from bowls with good purify water. I’ve attempted cosmetic bowls as good as potion bowls. I’ve attempted soaking them with antiseptic as good as soaking them only with hot H2O to equivocate any slow antiseptic smells. I’ve attempted bottled water, good water, city H2O as good as sleet water. My sister has a same complaint with her cats; these cats have been not related. I’ll watch my cats try to path up a the small bit of sleet H2O which has picked up in a shoal tip of a cosmetic storage garbage bin when not some-more than dual feet divided there’s a cosmetic play which we put out which is superfluous with…you got it…the same sleet water! we do not get it as good as any suggestions to insist this bizarre poise would be appreciated.

maybe your tap water has a peculiar taste to them. Perhaps they prefer the minerals and soot that are no doubt in the container that is collecting the rainwater.
My cats prefer to drink Brita filtered water.
Cats are finicky and, well, just plain weird sometimes.
One of my cats, given the choice, always tries to hop up on the table and drink from drinking glasses, rather than her bowl, even if it contains the identical water as in the bowl. She’s just strange, that’s all. We’ve never been able to break her of this incredibly annoying habit.
I recall reading recently that it has been determined that cats are incapable of tasting "sweet" flavors. They crave pungent, fishy and fatty flavors.
Maybe it’s the temperature. The shallow water would be warmer.
Cats generally prefer running water, since it’s fresher than standing/still water. I guess they can sense something we can’t. My cat never liked bowl water, but always wanted something freshly filled from the tap, preferably from a cup.
You might want to check your local pet store for a "pet fountain." It’s a special bowl with a pump inside of it to keep the water trickling down a ramp and running fresh. My cat loved it.
That’s really funny – it is supposed to be the opposite, that cats have very sensitive stomachs and by instinct only drink running water. This sounds characteristic of a dog, though – are you sure they’re cats and not dogs? I would check.
Just kidding about the dog thing, of course. But for an example, my cat actually prefers to drink directly from the tap – he will jump up on the counter and ask us to turn it on, and he will drink directly from the streaming tap. Now we fill up his bowl but he refuses to drink it.
So I guess I don’t have an answer to why your cats prefer the still water – it defies most of what we know about cats.
I read in a book that cats like dirty water because it’s fresh water to them. water in a bowl that’s been sitting there for a bit just dosen’t work for them, it needs to be dripping from somewhere to be "fresh". Other than that i have nothing
Probably just because it tastes and smells different. Cats get "flavor cravings" just as humans do.
I used to think that was the case too, until I realized that my cats won’t drink standing water!
I highly recommend the Drinkwell Pet Fountain (it retails for about $40, though you may be able to find it cheaper on eBay.) My cats drink about a quart of water a day, and my vet has even commented that their kidney health and weight is perfect and she attributes it to the Drinkwell.
For the same reason dogs like to drink out of the toilet. It is instinctual for animals to prefer drinking fresh or flowing water rather than standing water.
